On February 15, 2019 I hosted my first Pop-Up Makers Exhibition in Madison Heights. With the intention of shining light on arts, culture, and the development of the Downtown Area in our city, we hosted more than 16 artists, grossed over $5,000 in sales, and raised more than $1,400 for the Madison heights Arts Board for their upcoming mural project.
To do this, we found a vacant space in the Downtown District (yet to be developed). This space was specifically chosen due to its proximity to the new brewery that was under construction in the same strip mall. The idea was to show the potential of this area to neighbors who believed building a downtown area in a zone that was mostly vacant industrial buildings was futile and would never happen.
The one night only event was a huge success. Cadillac Straights Brewing Company provided free home brew, and the neighboring wine distributer offered free wine service. The event was free for vendors to participate in, and free for the public to attend. We provided food and beverages and loud music to create ambiance. To fill the space we not only invited 16 local artists to bring their creations, but we contacted locals who were selling cool items and furniture via Facebook marketplace, to bring their items to the space to create seating and displays, and to sell their items at the show. Everyone invited sold something.
Hundreds of locals attended the event throughout the evening and it was a huge success. COVID put a wrench in our plans of hosting one annually, but this year we did manage to host our second. Hosting 10 local artists, open for 2 days. We saw more than 200 people come through the doors, and grossed over $3,000 throughout the event.
